Blackwater diving
Specialized Night Dive

The Deep Awakens

Suspend yourself in the pitch-black open ocean. Witness the largest vertical migration on Earth as bizarre, transparent larval creatures and deep-sea predators rise from the abyss.

What is Blackwater Diving?

Unlike a standard night dive on a reef, Blackwater diving takes place in the open ocean, over hundreds of meters of water. There is no bottom. There is no reef. Only the glowing downline and the strange creatures of the deep.

The Light Tether

We suspend a heavily weighted line from our boat, rigged with high-powered underwater lights. You hover around this column of light as it slowly drifts with the current.

Pelagic Magic

The lights attract microscopic plankton, which in turn attract weird and wonderful macro life—larval mantis shrimp, paper nautilus, jellyfish, and translucent squids.

Space Walk

With no points of reference other than your buddy and the downline, diving in the blackwater feels like an astronaut floating in deep space. It is a surreal experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need an Advanced or Night Diver license?
Blackwater diving takes place in a bottomless environment with zero ambient light. It requires excellent buoyancy control and spatial awareness to avoid drifting too deep or away from the light line. The Advanced or Night Diver certifications ensure you have the foundational skills for this environment.
Is it scary to dive with no bottom?
It can be intimidating for the first few minutes, which is why our instructors strictly monitor the group. However, once you settle into the glow of the downline and start spotting the incredible microscopic life, the fear usually turns into sheer fascination.
What will we see?
We look for macro (very small) life. You might see larval forms of reef fish, transparent crustaceans, salps, comb jellies, swimming sea cucumbers, and paper nautilus. It is a macro photographer's dream.
What is the Blackwater + Manta combo?
This premium trip combines two spectacular night experiences. We do one dive at a reef site like Manta Point (where mantas are occasionally active at night) and a second dive suspended in the open ocean blackwater.
Are underwater lights provided?
Yes, standard dive torches are included in your gear rental. We provide the high-powered downline lights that attract the marine life. If you have a professional photography rig with video lights, we highly recommend bringing it!
